1) Royal Bangs - Brother
All the way from Knoxville, Tennessee, these guys have it going on.
Their first album is called “We Breed Champions” and it is made up of
excellent songs, duelling guitars, a singer who’s a shouter, a drummer
who is insane and an incredible live show to boot. Wait til they come
to your town. Til then, dig this “Brother”!
2) Malajube - Ursuline
“Malajube have gone prog? Not really. But their new record is certainly
hinting at a weirder side. There are lots of unicorns in their bathroom
and their roadcrew is made up of dwarfs and fairies. Do expect to get
blown away by one of the best live bands we have on the label.
3) The Notwist - Boneless (Panda Bear Remix)
Germany’s finest are getting the cool remix treatment from Mr. Animal
Collective himself. The Panda Bear album was great. The latest Animal
Collective is amazing! The latest Notwist album is in a league of its
own. What a band!
4) Lambchop - Slipped Dissolved & Loosed
Kurt Wagner is one of our longest going artists, who continues to amaze us. This is from his latest album OH (ohio), which easily stands up to the best in his huge body of work.
5) Dear Reader - Never Goes
The most heartfelt music we have heard this year comes from South
Africa! South Africa? That’s right. Dear Reader are from Johannesburg
and their album “Replace Why With Funny” is the richest and most
amazingly sculptured piece of music we have heard in ages. Did we
mention that the music is very heartfelt? And that it comes, uhm,
stright from the heart?
6) Calexico - Man Made Lake
Calexico’s latest, “Carried To Dust” was an incredible return to form.
Following the somewhat different “Garden Ruin” Joey Burns and John
Convertine and their internationally mixed gang of colaborateurs
delivered an album that contains some of their best songs to date. This
example here shines especially bright with its sinister undertones and
the very un-Calexico like fuzzed out guitarwork.
7) Toy Fight - High Noon
Our very first band from France. Toy Fight compose and arrange very
remarkable songs in a very mature way. With the added help of Pauline
“Mina Tindle” Delassus, they have crafted an album full of compelling
and shiny little pop gems. We are very proud to have them!!!
8 ) Port O Brien - I Woke Up Today
What a calling card this song is. Port O’Brien hail from just south of
San Francisco and are currently working on their next masterpiece. This
track opens the album “All We Could Do Was Sing”, and ever since we
have heard it, all we could do was indeed sing along…!
9) O Death - Angeline
Another live favorite. If you have not seen O’Death live, you don’t
know what the soundtrack to the Civil War could have sounded in the
hands of a bunch of punks on fire. This song is an example of how
O’Death can turn it down as well, but do check out their album “Broken
Hymns, Limb and Skin”. It is full of stomping, storming anthems to hoot
along. And do go see them live. You will never regret it!
10) Lackthereof - Fake Empire
We LOVE Menomena. And we love pretty much everything the individual
members do in their free time, musically of course. Brent Knopf had
produced the wonderful Dear Reader album. But Danny Seim, the titan a
la batterie takes of time from Menomena to record album after album
under the name Lackthereof. Here he pays hommage to the very mighty The
National, one of his favorite bands. And frankly, this version of their
song leaves nothing much to be desired. The Lacktherof album “Your
Anchor” was one of last year’s most overlooked masterpieces. Go find
it, it is amazing!
